Anett Kontaveit has risen to No. 2 in the world despite only making two finals in 2022 and winning one of them. She has had a very poor season so far, losing first and second rounds in many tournaments, including one first-round elimination French Open 2022. Although she has climbed the rankings and achieved a career-best rank of #2, she suffered a major setback.

Kontaveit had to part with her coach Dmitri Tursunov, a former number 20. Tursunov has been part of the Kontaveit team since last August and after less than a year together they had to part ways. The main reason for the split is that due to some severe restrictions, Tursunov could not accompany Konteveit to their training sessions and tournaments and it severely affected their game. Kontaveit addressed the problems in an interview.

Talking to the Estonian outlet ERRORS, Kontaveit explained the problems she faced. She said: “The reason is that it is very difficult for him to get visas at the moment because he has a Russian passport and therefore he cannot accompany me to many tournaments. I still need a coach who can accompany me and who doesn’t have so many practical problems.”

Kontaveit also said: “In view of the situation, there was a lack of such security. He couldn’t come to America with me in March and now he had a visa problem regarding England. The visa process was very complicated for him.”

She said that the situation has become quite difficult for her as well. She joked: “I think it’s all connected. If there is a good feeling off the pitch, it will reflect more on the pitch.” She also thanked him by saying: “I would like to thank him for a very successful and strong cooperation, I am very grateful to him”,

Tursunov and Kontaveit wished each other the best for their upcoming journey as the Dup parted amicably. Tursunov wrote: “I would like to announce that Anett and I will not continue our collaboration.“I would like to thank Anett for this opportunity, congratulate her on the highest ranking in her career and wish her every success in the future. I’m proud of the work we’ve done and a little sad, but sometimes good things end. Thanks again and good luck!”
