Cleveland Guardians are reversing course and offering Jose Ramirez a long-term deal

The Cleveland Guardians might actually be willing to shell out big bucks to ensure Jose Ramirez stays with the organization long-term.

The Guardians could also be called Cleveland Jose Ramirez’s. He’s the best the franchise has to offer for them, and after some chatter it looks like they’re finally paying him that way.

Initially, it didn’t look like Cleveland was ready to give Ramirez the long-term extension he’s worth. Now the team and the Ramirez camp are discussing a new deal, according to The Athletic.

The Cleveland Guardians, of course, turn back and offer Jose Ramirez a long-term contract

Contract proposals have been exchanged both ways and it is hoped to reach an agreement before opening day.

“They are poised to award a contract that would almost certainly more than double the largest in team history,” wrote Zack Meisel.

Granted, it wouldn’t take much to greatly outperform the three-year, $60 million deal Edwin Encarnacion landed. Cleveland is not known to be a big spender lately.

That will change if they strike a deal with Ramirez, who should be well over $60 million. The Athletic quoted sources as saying Matt Olson’s new Braves contract has been negotiated. He signed an eight-year extension for $168 million.

If the deal doesn’t close before opening day, Ramirez will be on trade watch.

“The Guardians would seriously consider a deal this summer if the two sides fail to reach an agreement and the team is eliminated from the playoff race,” Meisel wrote.

Opening day is fast approaching, so the pressure will be on the Guardians to get things sorted. According to The Athletic, Ramirez is “happy to spend the rest of his career in Cleveland,” so if it doesn’t happen, that’s up to the team.
