CJ McCollum on Attention to Unvaccinated NBA Players: I Feel We’ve Been Targeted

When the training camps opened, there was a lot of attention about the small number of unvaccinated players. Does that bother you? CJ McCollum: Yes, it did. I felt like we were targeted. Obviously, people look at us. We play a sport for a living. It is entertainment. People looked at us like a bar. In fact, we were a good fit: We had 98% of our federation volunteer to vaccinate, while the public was 55% or 60% at the time. No one talks about American companies going through the same problems, no one talks about how there are healthcare workers going through similar problems. It’s that we’re in the spotlight, and I think that’s unfair because we’ve done a great job educating our players.

I spoke with CJ McCollum about starting to serve as NBPA President during this challenging time. We talked a lot about Covid testing protocols and vaccines, plus the human side when discussed in commercial rumors. nytimes.com/2021/12/12/spo…5:44 pm

More on this plot

Have you had to explain to others why getting more tested for coronavirus is a good thing? [The league and union agreed to require additional testing, even for vaccinated players, after Thanksgiving, which has coincided with an uptick in positive tests.] CJ McCollum: I think when we explain to people how important it is to know – there are a lot of things that are rated as positive but are asymptomatic. So I think testing on holidays when people are on a plane or traveling, family is coming in from the suburbs, you’re gathering, you’re going to be more exposed. It just makes sense and the only bad thing that can come from it is realizing that you are a positive person. But the good news is that you find out early and you can save and not expose some of your friends and family. -through the New York Times / December 12, 2021
