CJ Gardner-Johnson’s behavior towards Saints coaches reportedly paved the way for the Eagles trade

The New Orleans Saints, who traded defensive back CJ Gardner Johnson to the Philadelphia Eagles, shocked many. But according to one report, it had to happen.

On August 30, the day of the NFL roster cut deadline, the New Orleans Saints made a rather shocking decision. They decided to Trade safety CJ Gardner-Johnson and a 2025 seventh-round pick for the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 sixth-round pick. The move made Philadelphia’s active offseason that much better. But why would the Saints trade away their talented defender?

According to New Orleans Football’s Nick Underhill (subscription required), let the Saints know they would not re-sign Gardner-Johnson “on his terms.” Not only that, Underhill reports that Gardner-Johnson “has stopped taking coaching.”

Saints: Reasons reported for CJ Gardner-Johnson to trade Eagles

Gardner-Johnson, a 2019 fourth-round pick from Florida, was entering the final year of his rookie contract and should reach free agency by the end of the 2022 campaign. Gardner-Johnson chose to remain in training camp during negotiations.

NOLA.com’s Jeff Duncan noted in a post-trade article (subscription required) that Gardner-Johnson was injured during a practice session after a collision and yelled at the team’s coaches, “Look, that’s what you all wanted.” The quote, Duncan notes, “probably referred to his uncertain contract status.”

Speaking to the media about the trade, head coach Dennis Allen said the decision wasn’t easy but he was confident in their defensive backfield, which he called “the deeper positions” they had.

The Eagles continued their strong offseason by adding another talented player to their defense. Edge rusher Haason Reddick, cornerback James Bradberry, defensive tackle Jordan Davis, linebacker Nakobe Dean and now Gardner-Johnson. This is a team going all in to win the NFC East and possibly go into a deep playoff run.

Now it remains to be seen whether the Eagles can agree on a contract extension with Gardner-Johnson.
