CJ ENM launches The Boys and Hero in Busan

CJ ENM, which owns Korea’s largest film producer and distributor, uses the Asian Contents & Film Market this week to launch a handful of new titles while basking in its recent box office and festival success.

“The Boys” will premiere as a special screening at the expanded Korean Cinema Today section of the Busan International Film Festival. This crime drama delves into the lives of three teenagers who have been falsely accused and jailed on a brutal robbery murder case. Fifteen years later, they are seeking a retrial to prove their innocence.

The veteran cast includes Seol Kyung Gu (“Kingmaker”), Yu Jun Sang (“Along With The Gods: Two Worlds”), Jin Kyung (“Beasts Clawing At Straws”), Heo Sung Tae (“Hunt”, “Squid Game “) and Yeom Hye Ran (“Special Delivery”). The Boys was directed by Chung Ji Young, whose notable works include National Security and Black Money.

History has proven that freedom comes at a price. Directed by JK Youn, “Hero” is set in early 20th-century Korea during the Japanese colonial era and tells the story of a Korean independence activist fighting to liberate his motherland. The film portrays his final days through music and song, and stars musical actors Chung Sung Hwa and Kim Go Eun (of TV series Guardian: The Lonely and Great God and Yumi’s Cells fame).

To keep the historical theme and set in 1933, the action spy movie is Phantom. A secret agent, part of a Japanese colonization resistance movement called the “Phantoms,” is tasked with assassinating the governor-general and must outwit a trap set with four other suspects at a remote mansion. The story is told in a single day. Directed by Lee Hae-young (“Believer”), it stars Sul Kyung Gu, Lee Hanee, Park So Dam and Park Hae Soo.

The company also intends to finalize some final deals on two of this year’s biggest commercial hits.

In Confidential Assignment 2: International, the North-South Korean cop friends reunite for the second time. The North Korean detective (played by Hyun Bin) joins forces with his South Korean counterpart (played by Yoo Hai Jin) and a US FBI agent (played by Daniel Henney) on another confidential mission. The film hit Korean theaters on September 7, 2022 and has had over 6 million admissions.

Released in July, Alienoid is a sic-fi history-fantasy directed by Choi Dong-hoon (Assassination). The all-star cast includes Ryu Jun-yeol (“The Battle: Roar to Victory”), Kim Woo-bin (“Master”), Kim Tae-ri (“Space Sweepers”) and So Ji-sub ( “confession”).

CJ previously announced that it has closed a large number of deals for Broker and Decision to Leave, its two art house titles, which released in competition at Cannes in May. Decision earned Park Chan-wook the Best Director award and is now considered Korea’s Oscar contender.
