‘City didn’t want him you clown’ – Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville clash over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United exit rumors

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford last year he had a remarkable career spanning 12 seasons real Madrid and juventus, but widespread reports on Saturday claimed the 37-year-old was looking to leave again. According to The Times, which first published the story, he wants to play in the Champions Leaguewhich United cannot offer after finishing sixth last season.

The Portuguese forward has been an integral part of UCL throughout his career and the prospect of being removed from the top of European elite football would be a step backwards. Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s new manager, will be aiming for a Champions League return but that’s at least a year away and veteran Ronaldo has no time to lose.

Carragher said he could not understand the timing of Ronaldo’s apparent request to leave United unless he received unexpected information about his role in the new season.

Carragher sparked a Twitter debate with former Manchester United captain Gary Neville when he wrote: “Ronaldo did exactly what I expected him to do, score goals but make the team worse. The transfer request also demolishes the idea that he turned Man City down because of his love for Man United.

It was a reference to the saga in which United appeared to have beaten Manchester City in signing Ronaldo last August when Alex Ferguson asked his former star player to return to the Red Devils.

Carragher’s comments prompted Neville to respond: “I understand you’re full of yourself but he can turn City down for United because he likes them more and still wants to leave this summer. He left before but still loved the club. Enjoy Saturday night and your short period of success.”

Carragher, who has seen Liverpool win a slew of trophies during a difficult time for Manchester United, didn’t stop there. β€œCity didn’t want him with you [clown] and you’re the same guy who kept saying it’s like Elvis arrived in Manchester! Elvis left the building,” Carragher replied.

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo has recently been linked with both Manchester United’s domestic rivals Chelsea and Jose Mourinho’s Serie A club Roma. The Italians might not offer Champions League football in 2022-23 but Chelsea, who finished third in the Premier League last season, could.
