Chrome’s mute tab feature is about to get even faster

Autoplaying videos and ads can be extremely annoying when surfing the web, but Google has taken steps with its Chrome browser to make it even easier. Now, Google Chrome is preparing a small tweak that makes it much easier to mute tabs with just one click.

As it is today, Google Chrome shows a speaker icon when a tab starts playing any kind of sound, whether it’s intentional or not. This serves as an indicator of where the sound is coming from, by right clicking on the tab shows the “mute website” option.

However, in the future, Google will adjust this process so that the speaker icon in Chrome can instantly turn off that website when clicked. The change has appeared in the latest Canary release of Chrome as spotted by The Story of Chrome and u / Leopeva. However, the new behavior doesn’t work by default and instead requires the flag to be enabled.

To try this new behavior for yourself, you can download Chrome Canary on Windows, Mac, Linux, or switch to the Canary Channel on Chrome OS. From there, you’ll need access chrome://flags and find the following option.
