Christie gives Avatar 2 Best Digital Display in Australia

Just as Avatar: The Way of Water nears $1 billion at the global box office, the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Sydney, a leading heritage cinema in Australia, is showing the film via a newly installed laser projection system from Christie Digital Systems.

Powered by the Christie CP4440-RGB, the advanced format cinema projector with Christie Real|Laser technology is housed in the 700-seat theater’s Orpheum Auditorium, which features a 13-meter (42.6-foot) wide screen that is now capable of is, high-framerate titles in 4K resolution at 120 frames per second.

The installation offers a contrast study between old and new. The auditorium itself, dating from 1935, impresses with its unique Art Deco design, while the projection system’s architecture and processing technology suppresses the motion blur typical of large-screen theatres.

The new projector was commissioned by the HOYTS Cinema Technology Group team led by General Manager Adam Wrightson and Technical Manager Bruce Ker. Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace operations manager Sam Hanson and his deputy Oliver Halicki were also involved in the planning and installation. The 45,000 lumen projector is engineered to deliver artifact-free images

“We are delighted to equip The Orpheum – the largest auditorium in our cinema complex – with the Christie CP4440-RGB, redefining the premium cinematic experience with incredibly colorful and detailed lifelike 4K images,” said Alex Temesvari, General Manager of Hayden Picture Palace Orpheum. “The quality of the images presented during screenings of Avatar: The Way of Water is absolutely stunning. We are proud to be the only cinema in Sydney to show this blockbuster exclusively in high frame rate 3D.”

Han Kim, executive director of Christie’s Asia Pacific region, added, “The Christie’s CineLife+ series of cinema projectors are at the forefront of modern cinema technology with the most advanced electronics. We are very pleased that the CP4440-RGB installed at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace has proven itself as a high-performance projection system, offering a new world of color and contrast, as well as high efficiency and long lifespan.” Christie gives Avatar 2 Best Digital Display in Australia
