Chris Rock reboots Everyone Hates Chris

Chris Rock brings back his popular family comedy sitcom Everyone Hates Chris with a twist.

The show ran for four seasons between 2005 and 2009. Across 88 episodes, viewers saw the chronicle of a teen rock growing up in 1980s Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. The show starred child actor Tyler James Williams as the title character and fellow child actors Imani Hakim, Tequan Richmond, with Tichina Arnold and Terry Crews as parents.

In the past, Rock has said that casting “Everybody Hates Chris” hasn’t been without its challenges. “I had to fight for Tichina,” he told ESSENCE in 2016. He added: “I’m not even going to tell you who the network is [UPN] searched. she is [Arnold] literally as good as Tina Fey or Julia Louis-Dreyfus or any of those chicks.”

The show, which originally aired on CBS, was loosely based on Rock’s real life. The actor has also narrated every episode of the show. Everyone Hates Chris is currently available on multiple streaming platforms. But now Rock is bringing it back as an animated series: “Everybody still hates Chris,” reported Deadline. Rock will reprise his role as the show’s narrator and serve as executive producer. It’s unknown if any previous stars of the original sitcom will also be lending their voices for the reboot.

“Chris Rock is one of the most gifted comedians of all time,” said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO, Paramount Media Networks & MTV Entertainment Studios. The show is slated to stream on Paramount+ and Comedy Central. “A reimagining of this groundbreaking, critically acclaimed series has long been a source of creative discussion at our studio,” said George Cheeks, CBS President and CEO.

The ‘Top Five’ actor and director is in good company when it comes to hit comedy acts launching animated series. Damon Wayans ventured into the world of animation in the ’90s with his show Waynehead. The cartoon is based on Wayans’ childhood growing up in New York. The title character, Damey Wayne, was heavy-footed and came from a cash-strapped family, just like Wayans. The show ran on the WB Network for one season.

Comedian Eddie Murphy also found his way into the world of animation when his claymation show The PJs debuted in 1999. The show ran for three seasons and focused on the mishaps of the Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs housing project community and its superintendent, Thurgood Stubbs. Chris Rock reboots Everyone Hates Chris
