Shenzhou mission astronaut 13 Wang YapingChina’s second woman in space and the first to go to the space station, playing a song with the guzheng, a traditional Chinese string instrument, on the Tianhe space module (core) of Tiangong) on February 15 to celebrate the Lantern Festival, which marks the celebration of the Lunar New Year.
Wang played a piece of the Chinese folk song Jasmine as an introduction to the annual Lantern Festival Gala broadcast by China Communications Corporation.
Meanwhile, crew members Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu wrote the “puzzle” in Chinese brush calligraphy.
Lantern Festival, falls on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The three previous Shenzhou 13 astronauts participated in televised celebrations to mark the Lunar New Year on February 1st.
The China National Space Administration arranged some interactive events with its astronauts to highlight the country’s space achievements, raise national pride and young citizens’ interest in science.
