Child seriously injured when car hits sidewalk in Sydney

A 12-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being hit by a car that drove onto a footpath in Sydney’s east.

The car drove onto the footpath at the junction of Gardeners Rd and Bunnerong Rd in Kingsford at around 3.40pm on Tuesday, pinning the boy against a tree.

The little boy was trapped for about 40 minutes before rescue workers were able to free him.

He was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.

The 17-year-old driver of the car was not injured.

He was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital for mandatory tests.

Footage taken at the scene around 4pm showed a white car with a red P number plate on the footpath along Gardeners Road.

Dozens of police officers, an ambulance and a police rescue vehicle were also on site.

The car could be seen just meters from a bus stop and pedestrian crossing while an officer spoke to a group of schoolchildren sitting nearby.

A crime scene has been secured and is being investigated by special police.
