Chelsea boss Tuchel: The competition with City and Liverpool gets me out of bed in the morning

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel says he enjoys competing with Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Tuchel’s side are third in the league, 11 points behind second-placed Liverpool and 12 behind leaders City – albeit with a game in hand on both.

Chelsea had led the league for much of the early season and were a point ahead of City at the top of the league on 1 December.

However, due to below-par form throughout the month, they picked up just nine points from six games and slipped to second place, while City picked up a perfect 18 points over the same period.

Liverpool’s strong form also saw them overtake Chelsea and their 10-game winning streak from mid-January to last weekend’s 2-2 draw with City saw them close the gap on Pep Guardiola’s side and away from Tuchel’s side to solve.

Ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final on Sunday against Crystal Palace, Tuchel was asked how he plans to close the gap on the league’s top two clubs.

“We know we’re currently competing with perhaps the two most consistent and perhaps the best teams in Premier League history,” replied Tuchel. “But I have to say I like it.

“It gets you out of bed early and we won’t stop thinking about how to bridge the gap. This season isn’t over yet, we’re still fighting and we shouldn’t stop (trying) to get as many points as possible and then we’ll draw a line under it, analyze, try to figure out what’s good and where we can still grow be able.

“We need to sort out the situation at the club in general and then hopefully we’re ready to be in the same mood as we started this season because we were ready to go the full length of the race.

“We’ve struggled more with injuries and COVID in between than they have, so full credit to them. But they are the role model and we will not back down.”

Should Chelsea beat Palace on Sunday, they will face either City or Liverpool. These teams will play the other semi-final on Saturday.

Chelsea have met City and Liverpool twice in the league this season and also played Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Carabao Cup final.

They lost both games against City 1-0. Chelsea drew 2-2, 1-1 with Liverpool in the league and lost on penalties in the Carabao Cup final.
