Champion jockey demands Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate concussion: ‘Let it go out with a big bang’

Champion jockey Glen Boss has called for a restructuring of two of Australia’s biggest horse races.

Boss – a four-time Cox Plate winner and famous for having ridden Makybe Diva to three consecutive Melbourne Cup victories – wants both iconic races to be staged much later in the day.

At the start of the All Star Mile on Monday, Boss said it was time to shed some light on the races.

“Can you imagine the final race, the Cox Plate, on a Saturday afternoon at night,” Boss said.

“You have a concert, you have fireworks, let it go off with a big bang.”

The call was endorsed by former Australian cricketer and media commentator Simon O’Donnell.

O’Donnell, who works at radio station SEN and is a racing enthusiast and owner, said the Cox Plate would be the perfect race for the night.

The 2040 meter event is currently in the spotlight, with it recently being revealed that there has been a push to make it the final race of the Spring Carnival and push it back to late November.

The new plan sees the Cox Plate becoming the ‘grand finale’ of the carnival, increasing its prize money and taking place two weeks after the Melbourne Cup.

Part of the proposed changes will include a $3 million cash injection to bring it to $8 million and put it on par with the Melbourne Cup.

The proposed new date is November 25th.

Although no decisions have yet been made, it has been reported that Racing Victoria recently held several high-level meetings on changes to the Spring Carnival.

But Moonee Valley CEO Michael Browell previously said there was only a 50 percent chance of the Cox plate changing.

The Cox Plate is currently scheduled for Saturday October 28th this year, the same date as the very first Cox Plate in 1922.

Progress has reportedly been made in recent discussions.

Cox Plate could be out with Jockey suspended for 12 months.
