Saturday Night Live star Cecily Strong didn’t enter the good night quietly, saying a heartfelt farewell to the show in her final appearance on Weekend Update, in which she starred as her beloved character Cathy Anne.
Cathy Anne wears a Santa hat she said her hair was scalped in an escalator mishap and reveals the reason for her appearance.
“I’m a little bit emo tonight because I’m here to say goodbye,” she said.
When Anker Michael Che pressed for a reason for her departure, she said, “It turns out prison.”
“After seven years, you had enough of me,” she said, saying that prison would give her stability and that she already had “inner friends.” (Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant were pictured as the friends inside.)
Farewell to Colin Jost, Strong shared a “pic of you and me doing ‘Update’ together,” she said.
“Everyone has to go to jail eventually and it’s just my time now but I feel really lucky to have had so many of the best moments of my life with these people that I love so much,” she said character and then hugged both cast members after she sang a snippet of “I Did It My Way” and changed the lyrics to “High Che.”
In the show’s final sketch, Kenan Thompson said goodbye to Strong and honored her “11 years at Radio Shack” before host Austin Butler and the cast serenaded her with a tearful rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas.”
Ahead of tonight’s show, which starred Butler and musical guest Lizzo, NBC announced the December 17 episode would be Strong’s last.
News of her departure was posted on Saturday Night Live’s Instagram. “Tonight we’re sending away one of the best that ever made it. We will miss you, Cecily!”
Over 11 seasons, Strong has been notable for portraying characters such as The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation with at a Party, and with a louche impersonation of Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro and most recently Arizona gubernatorial nominee , Kari, excellent lake. During her time on SNL, Strong even hosted Weekend Update alongside Seth Meyers and then Colin Jost.
She is currently starring in the second season of Schmigadoon!, a musical spoof streaming on Apple+. Like “SNL,” the show is produced by Lorne Michaels.
