CCTV captures the moment five lions escaped from their enclosure at Taronga Zoo

Video footage has been released showing an adult lion and its four cubs escaping their enclosure by crawling under a wire fence last month.

CCTV footage released by Sydney’s Taronga Zoo shows the lions playing with the fence before the first cub could squeeze under it.

Another three cubs followed along with their father Ato while the lionesses of the pride stayed in the enclosure.

Taronga Zoo said the lions surveyed the space a few yards outside their enclosure before responding to a lioness’s call and the keeper’s urging to return to their den.

Three cubs were said to have found their own way back into their enclosure, but one had to be sedate by the zoo’s emergency response team before being returned by zookeepers.

Keepers continued to encourage the adult male lion to return, saying he eventually found his own way back into the den to be reunited with his pride.

The incident happened at 6.40am on November 2 while guests attending the zoo’s Roar And Snore nighttime camping experience were on site.

Locals heard sirens wail as some guests were ordered out of their tents and into the bathrooms while staff rushed to secure the lions.

The zoo said last month it was looking into the incident closely and said it would make any necessary changes to the lion enclosure.

On Thursday, the zoo said: “Taronga’s review of the lion incident is ongoing and an independent, specialist forensic engineer is still conducting detailed investigations into the failure and the complex chain link fencing system.

“Your review will also advise on any necessary repairs.”

It said the lions had been placed in an outdoor area away from visitors until the investigation was completed and were unlikely to return to the main exhibition until Christmas.
