Relations between the former “fab four” – the Prince and Princess of Wales and Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex – have been strained since the Sussexes stepped down as working royals in 2020.
In the documentary’s first teaser, released last week, Netflix referenced the fragile relationship between the two couples with a glass-breaking sound effect between a tearful photo of Meghan and a stern shot of Catherine.
In the full trailer released Tuesday, videos of Catherine hiding from the paparazzi appear to have been used to demonstrate a point about privacy and a “war on Meghan.”
In a video ahead of Catherine’s wedding to the royal family, then-Kate Middleton shielded her face from surrounding photographers.
Footage of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, was used along with Catherine.
No footage was used of Meghan surrounded by photographers.
In the voiceover, Harry first referred to Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, and said he “didn’t want history to repeat itself” in reference to the apparent parallel attention given to his wife Meghan.
“The pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution, this binge eating,” he says, referring to both Diana and Catherine through photographs.
“I was shocked.”
A photo emerged of Catherine standing stoically at a 2021 memorial service with a caption from Life and Style on December 20, 2010.
The headline read: “Princess in Crisis”.
The documentary also referenced headlines about Diana, including “The Secret Sadness of Princess Di” and “Di’s Private Battle.”
A headline reading “Royal Shame!” was also shown. although it’s unclear who the headline was about.
While there were videos of Catherine and Diana, the only shot of Meghan and Harry was the couple sitting in a car and turning their heads to see what was behind.
A separate shot showed a car seemingly chasing their vehicle down the street.
Meghan added off-screen, “I realized, ‘They will never protect you’.”
“Not your right”
Viewers called out the Sussexes for claiming a “feeding frenzy” and “war” over Meghan despite having no evidence in the footage, instead using videos and headlines by other women in the family.
“It’s funny that Meghan said she was being chased by the paparazzi but in the trailer there isn’t even a video of her being chased by the paparazzi – there are only videos of Diana and Kate,” one Twitter wrote -user.
“Define the relevance of Catherine appearing twice in a trailer for a documentary not about her,” said a second.
“When Netflix paid a ‘$100 million multi-year deal’ for a docuseries in which a couple told their story for the millionth time, and the trailers are full of archival photos and footage of Diana and Catherine being pursued by paparazzi,” added another added.
“The second trailer just shows Catherine and Diana being hounded by the press. So many manipulated images it’s going to be hard to take this thing seriously. It’s obvious they’re trying to make a hit about Catherine,” one tweeted.

“Everyone has the right to tell their story,” wrote one user, “but in a minute-long trailer discussing how Harry and Meghan were mistreated, you showed Catherine being viciously chased twice by the paps, Diana.” also twice and zero of it Meghan.”
Other fans added that “it’s not their place to share Kate’s or Diana’s story if they’re going off on theirs.”
“You single out Catherine. This isn’t supposed to be about her!” said one fan.
Commenting on the footage, Rob Jobson, editor of Sunrise, said: “It matters, you can’t say you’ve been hounded by the media for using photos taken by photographers outside a red carpet for a premiere and say, that they were there for you.
“That is an outright lie.
“To say that (Meghan and Diana) have the same issues didn’t actually happen…”

“If you have footage of what was going on, use the footage! Don’t use things that try to portray something that isn’t true,” he said.
Catherine’s “stern” look
The Princess of Wales was also mentioned in the original teaser trailer, which made her friends “sick”, a close source told Mail+.
The documentary featured a tearful photo of Meghan clutching a phone before the sound of glass breaking was heard as it panned to Kate, sending a “stern” look towards the camera.
The picture was taken during the Commonwealth Day service in 2019, with Prince Harry and Meghan sitting behind the Prince and Princess of Wales in the photo.
Above the picture is an audio commentary from Harry saying “Nobody sees what goes on behind closed doors”.
“The use of William and Catherine and the picture and the way it’s presented, my goodness,” royal expert Richard Eden told the publication.
