The mixed reaction to the universally popular couple came as the British royal family dealt with a new allegation of racism.
As a stopover in their busy schedule during the three-day Boston tour, the couple sat courtside at TD Garden to watch the Boston Celtics take on the Miami Heat.
As is usual with basketball games, the camera panned to prominent personalities in the stadium.
The crowd exploded as William and Catherine looked up at themselves on the jumbotron.
But it seems that not everything went as planned.
“They announced Prince William and Kate at TD Garden and had to take them off screen immediately because the crowd booed them…” one viewer later tweeted.
“Prince William and Princess Kate on the jumbotron at TD Garden followed by some boos and US chants,” said a second.
One commenter remarked: “Oh dear, are they USA booing and singing at Prince William and Kate? Awkward.”
“Definitely a mix of boos and cheers,” said another.
Others disagreed, believing they could only hear “a bit of mumbling, the majority of the audience just going on and enjoying the game”.
“The boo??? My whole family was there and there were no boos,” one viewer tweeted.
“What boos? Is it just me, I can’t hear anything?” asked another.
William and Catherine’s appearance in the US comes as the royal family deals with allegations of racism back home.
On Tuesday, Lady Susan Hussey, godmother to Prince William and honorary member of Buckingham Palace, resigned and apologized after a charity founder said she was asked at a royal reception if she was “really” British.
The guest, Ngozi Fulani, is the CEO of Sistah_Space, an organization that provides specialized services to African and Caribbean women affected by abuse.
Fulani was attending a domestic violence royal event organized by the Queen Consort on Tuesday, when she said a staff member asked a series of questions the palace called “unacceptable and deeply regrettable.”
Royal family responds
A Buckingham Palace spokesman confirmed the incident and said the palace was taking the situation “extremely seriously”.
“Unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments were made,” the spokesman said.
“We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani on this matter and invite her to discuss any elements of her experience in person if she so desires.
“Meanwhile, the affected person would like to express their sincere apologies for the pain caused and has resigned from their volunteer position with immediate effect.”
