A South Carolina woman who told police she witnessed her boyfriend shooting himself is now being charged for the murder of a teenager.

A grand jury entered an indictment against Cassandra Escobar20 years old, for murder only in the death of Caleb James. Escobar was dating James when he died last May of what she claimed at the time was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to an incident report from the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office. That report said that Escobar told delegates that James was “playing with a gun and accidentally shot himself” when they arrived at the scene. James was only 18 years old when he died.

The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation while the Darlington County Coroner’s Office worked to determine the cause of death. Hardee determined that James had been shot by someone else and listed murder as the cause of death.

That same day, deputies booked Escobar after charging her with a lesser amount of voluntary manslaughter. Her court records show that she managed to post the bond on the day she was detained. In the months that followed, prosecutors gathered evidence to present to a grand jury; The grand jury made the decision to increase the fee Thursday morning, according to Escobar’s court filings.

Authorities did not release any other information at this time and declined to comment further on the case. Instead, they mention a few brief statements from their past. W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center records show Escobar was re-arrested Thursday afternoon. As of Friday, facility records listed her as a current inmate being held on $25,000.

If the case goes to trial and leads to a conviction, Escobar could face a minimum sentence of 30 years in prison. Prosecutors can also pursue the death penalty Law of South Carolina. It is unclear whether prosecutors intend to do so.
