In the French Open semifinals, Casper Ruud lost the first set to a motivated Marin Cilic, but the Norwegian bounced back and won the match 3-6 6-4 6-2 6-2.
That was a fascinating encounter lasted over three hours and saw Ruud defeat Cilic. The Croatian continued to attack aggressively as he had done throughout the tournament. A lot of people were amazed by Ruud’s aggressiveness, which was quite high. He dropped the first set mainly because Cilic played well overall.

“I played my best tennis” – Casper Ruud
He served and hit well and when that happens he’s hard to beat. Cilic hit 15 winners in the first set, while Ruud only had three. Everything changed in the second set as they were now evenly matched. Ruud won a tight set 6-4 to level the match 1-1. Cilic has got one more win, but he also had seven more errors. That turned out to be too much in the end.
The fourth set was easily won by Ruud as Cilic continued to make mistakes. Cilic had more mistakes than winners in the opening set and that was too much to overcome. Ruud also served exceptionally effectively throughout the game, leaving Marin Cilic with limited opportunities. Cilic made a few more mistakes in the final set, bringing his total to 51 winners and 56 errors. Ruud had 39 and 21 points in the semifinals and will face Rafael Nadal in the final.
After the game, Casper Ruud explained his way to victory after falling behind. “It was a great game from my side,” he began. “I didn’t start the greatest. I was too defensive and I broke him in the second set and that got me going and then I played some of my best tennis. Super happy with the performance today. I think Marin is usually the one who plays very fast and very hard and that was the feeling I had. I figured I needed to level up and counterattack and take some faster shots and it worked. I’ve changed a bit, but I’ve also raised my level.”
Ruud spoke on Sunday about his opponent Rafael Nadal, whose Mallorca academy he joined in 2018. “When I look up to Rafa, the player I’m going to play against in the final, he never complains.” he said. “Perfect. He’s a perfect example of how to be on the pitch, never give up, never complain. He’s been my idol all my life.”
“It’s amazing, he’s the last player in the big three of the best players in the world that I’ve never played against. This is perfect timing and well worth the wait. Playing him in the Grand Slam final will be a special moment for me and hopefully for him too – he will play against a student from his academy. That will be fun”, he concluded.
