Carlos Correa, MLB’s Top Freelance Agent, Reportedly Hired Scott Boras in Agent Switching

MLB’s persistent owner lockout means trouble Carlos Correa, the top free on the market this holiday season, can’t sign a team yet. However, Correa could switch agents, and that’s exactly what he did. As Mark Berman reports, Correa has hired Scott Boras, perhaps the top agent in all of sports, to represent him ahead of his next contract.

Correa was previously represented by William Morris Endeavor (WME). Correa on Tuesday issued the following statement about its decision:

“I have decided to hire Boras Corporation to represent me moving forward. Boras Corporation offers the highest level of baseball expertise and proven experience.”

As The Athletic’s Evan Drellich recently reportedWME agents may be about to lose their MLBPA certification as the company recently purchased 10 minor league franchises. Likely, this played a role in Correa’s decision.

Correa, 27, is a two-time All-Star and he will start a 2021 campaign with Astros where he placed fifth in the AL MVP vote. Importantly, he was also able to stay healthy for the most part, which has not been the case during his career. Correa is an elite pack of high tier defense skills on short range and top tier production at disc (127 OPS + for his career with strong power numbers). With the market short, Correa’s next contract is estimated to be worth more than $300 million. Going into winter, our RJ Anderson ranked Correa as top free agent of class 2021-22.

As for Boras, he has long been one of the most powerful figures in MLB. His current client list includes people like Bryce Harper, Max Scherzer, Anthony Rendon, Corey Seager, and Gerrit Cole – all have signed major freelance agency deals in the past. In addition, Boras also represents Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman, Correa’s longtime teammate in Houston.

Whenever the owner lockout ends and the tournament resumes, Correa is expected to be aggressively hunted by several teams – Unit, Yankees, and maybe brave among them. Carlos Correa, MLB’s Top Freelance Agent, Reportedly Hired Scott Boras in Agent Switching
