Carla Esparza expected to face Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a rematch at some point: ‘It will be a much different fight’

Carla Esparza Now she’s aiming for a UFC title fight, but she hasn’t forgotten about avenging a particularly difficult fight in her past.

After becoming the UFC’s first strawweight champion, Esparza lost his first title defense against Joanna Jedrzejczyk by TKO round two times UFC 185 back in 2015.

In the six years since that fight, Esparza has remained near the top of the 115-pound division and with her current five-fight streak, she’s already considered the No. 1 contender to take on the champion. Rose Namajunas Next.

That said, Esparza – 3rd class straw MMA Fighting Global Ranking – knowing that she has unfinished business with Jedrzejczyk and that she eagerly awaits her chance to get revenge in a rematch.

“I think at some point in my career, I never really rematched anyone let alone lost,” Esparza said of Jedrzejczyk while speaking to MMA Fighting. “I think of myself as a very different fighter than when that fight happened.

“I definitely want to fight her again at some point. I think it will be a much different fight. “

Jedrzejczyk just said she will be interested in facing Esparza again as she awaits news from the UFC about her next fight after her last at UFC 248 in March 2020.

On that night, Jedrzejczyk lost an almost razor-sharp decision to split with Zhang Weili with the strawweight championship and she is trying to get another gold slot but no offers have been made for her.

Esparza has no problem facing Jedrzejczyk again but she won’t join any other fights until it becomes clear that she won’t be Namajunas’ next opponent.

Prior to UFC 268 taking place when Zhang lost to Namajunas in a rematch immediately after they first clashed in April, Esparza thought she had done more than enough to secure a championship but she was eliminated in the end. .

“I think for me it is best for Rose and I to fight, then Weili and Joanna to fight for the No. 1 candidate,” Esparza explained. “I think that’s what really means in my fan’s brain about exciting and meaningful matches.

“I will definitely fight [Joanna] Again. You want to be on top, you have to earn your way there. “

As much as Esparza predicts a final rematch against Jedrzejczyk, her only hope right now is that she gets a chance to face Namajunas once again with the strawweight title.

More than anything, Esparza wants another fight before next May, which is when she plans to have her wedding and she wants to enjoy her honeymoon after a big win.

“That’s the end goal right now,” Esparza said of fighting for the title. “It’s hard to think outside of that box but I’m determined to fight anyone. Just hoping I can fight before my wedding. ” Carla Esparza expected to face Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a rematch at some point: ‘It will be a much different fight’
