Cardinals fans were furious when Albert Pujols left for the Los Angeles Angels during the 2011-12 season, but it turned out they had no place.
Sports fans of St. Louis was furious when Albert Pujols left to the Angels after winning the Worlds with their beloved Cardinals. It was as if the Pujols stabbed them in the back, despite having achieved the top team title of the game the previous year.
However, was it really Pujols’ fault for leaving despite the Angels backing up a truck carrying him to his doorstep?
Pujols eventually accepted a 10-year offer from the Angels of $254 million. At the time, it was a huge stretch for a player who had just finished the season 31 years old. To put it mildly, it was a foolish decision by Artie Moreno, predictably backfired.
However, Cardinals fans were outraged at Pujols for leaving the franchise that raised him. The man who won three MVPs and two World Series’ in St. Louis, but that’s still not enough.
The Cardinals’ Offer to Albert Pujols Wasn’t Almost Enough
The Cardinals’ final offer to Pujols was a decade-long $210 million deal, with a portion certain to be deferred until after his retirement. In the end, that doesn’t come close to the $254 million the Angels are willing to pay for a star that’s over 30 years old.
After all, adding Pujols to the mix in LA didn’t turn out to be profitable. It was a smart move for the Cardinals not to overpay for Pujols, even though he is a homegrown star. Everyone was happy, except for the Cardinals fans, who had booed Pujols non-stop for years even though he had a very understandable reason for leaving.
I mean, who left $44 million on the table?
Rumors about Albert Pujols: The return of Cardinals makes sense
Pujols is the shell of his former self, but he can return home to St. Louis last time as a designated part-time mercenary, at least.
