World number 23 Coco Gauff secured her qualification for her first ever Grand Slam final when she defeated Martina Trevisan 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals of the French Open 2022. The win makes Coco the youngest French Open finalist since Kim Clijsters in 2001 and the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Maria Sharapova In the 2004 Wimbledon.

On what may be Coco’s biggest day of her pro career so far, the 18-year-old showed great maturity by not throwing wild celebrations and instead sending out a message of hope and peace when asked to write the usual message on one of the on-ground cameras. Gauff took the opportunity to write: “Peace. No more gun violence,” adds a heart and puts her name on it. The message was in light of the recent mass shootings that have crippled her country USA by indiscriminately gunning down innocent people.

Gauff has shown immense maturity in her interviews of late, and this interview was no different. With the recent shootings in the school in Texas where 19 children and 2 teachers lost their lives to a deranged teenager who opened fire in the classroom, tennis great Chris Evert appreciated Gauff’s attitude of speaking quickly and understanding that there is a world outside of tennis too.

“It’s the number one problem in America today, gun violence, so many horrible things have happened as a result, especially children, and I think them Gauff is very sensitive to it. She is very aware of this and has grown into a young woman who is just conscious of everything around her, not just in her own little bubble, and she is not self-centered or thinking about herself all the time.

“But when she’s on the court she can split up and that’s the most important thing – for that hour and a half or two of her life – like she does on the tennis court. But when she’s away from it, she’s really just a normal young lady. She is just wonderful, I can’t say enough wonderful superlatives about her.” said Evert at Eurosport.
