Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 is finally here, but most players will likely notice the disappearance of a key feature. This feature is the ability to farm materials and build structures, one of Fortnite’s most important mechanics. Although developer Epic Games hasn’t alerted players to this in advance, it is confirmed that removing buildings is part of the game’s storyline and should return in just a few days
In short, building will only be disabled in all Battle Royale modes for a limited time. As first leaked by Twitter user iFireMonkey, players will be given an in-game quest line called “No Permit” by The Imagined and tasked with bringing the mechanic back online. iFireMonkey claims that these quests will only be live until Tuesday March 29th, ultimately leaving players without building features for nine days.
As a replacement for building, the game introduced new sprint and mantle features. Instead of having to build stairs to get to hard-to-reach areas, players can now just run and climb these structures in no time. Since this leaves players with less protection from gunfire, they also gain Overshield to allow them to take additional damage. At the time of writing, it’s not clear if these mechanics will remain in the game once building is enabled again, but they’re certainly nifty additions.
