Can the Mavericks beat jazz with small lineups and 13 more questions on this series – The Athletic

The Dallas Mavericks’ first-round matchup against the Utah Jazz, which begins Saturday noon, looks set to be a strategic fascination. It very well should still be the case, although Luka Dončić’s calf strain and looming unavailability have overshadowed the series and will keep him away for Game 1 at least. There is intrigue in the schedules both coaches will bring this series and the adjustments will be made. This article contains the questions that intrigue me the most, presented in bold and scattered.

When will Dončić return? It’s hard to start anywhere else; Dončić is the team’s talismanic leader, dictating so much of his game and matchup advantages. I really don’t blame the Mavericks for taking the “everyday” approach when describing his injury, because his body’s process of replacing the torn portions of his muscle with scar tissue and strengthening it actually happens every day. But we do know that it takes an average of 16 days for this healing process to reach the point where his muscle regains enough strength to be trusted for high-impact, high-impact athletic performance. Read my interview with Jeff Stotts if you haven’t already.

Let’s wish for an optimistic happy return ahead of the average 16-day window. Will Dončić be as effective on his return? One of its physical advantages is its stop-start movements, for which the calf muscle is crucial.
