Esther’s death came “a few weeks short of her 97th birthday,” Caitlyn shared.
“I will miss her very much,” added the 73-year-old in her tribute. “Love you mom.”
Fans first met Esther when Caitlyn appeared alongside ex Kris Jenner and their children in Keeping Up With the Kardashians and appeared at various family gatherings.
She became a notable fixture on I Am Cait, the E! Documentary series centered on Caitlyn’s journey as a transgender woman.
“It seems like as people start to understand more, the stigma of being different will go away,” Esther said on an episode of the show.
“For me, that’s the beauty of it [Caitlyn] She gives herself permission because, like all of us, when you’ve seen something over and over again, you get used to it, right?”
Esther also joined Caitlyn as her special asset at the 2015 ESPYs, where the gold-medal decathlete was honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. During her acceptance speech, Caitlyn credited her mother for being her source of strength.
“I always thought that I got my courage and determination from my father, who ended up on the beach in Omaha and fought all of World War II,” Caitlyn said at the time.
“I realize now mom: I think I got all those qualities from you.”
Esther is survived by friends and family, including granddaughters Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner.
