Butt Design class chilling interest in DeAndre Ayton

NBA draft night couldn’t have gone better for the Detroit Pistons. Now they may not be so desperate to pursue their biggest free agency goals.

That Pistons met Paydirt during Thursday’s NBA draft when Jaden Ivey fell to them in 5th place and they then successfully maneuvered to also land Jalen Duren.

It wasn’t the most likely scenario, but in the team’s eyes it was the “best-case scenario,” according to The Athletic’s James Edwards III. It could also affect their strategy for the rest of the offseason.

Suns star DeAndre Ayton is a restricted free agent and was considered a prime target for Detroit. That may no longer be the case.

NBA rumors: Piston’s draft class cools interest in DeAndre Ayton

“DET could of course still pursue Ayton once you have his place on the cap but I feel the draft went so well in their favor (they didn’t count on 5 years ivey) that they did with the youngsters collaborate and seek free-hand veteran support. Troy has said many times not to skip steps,” Edwards tweeted.

Edwards continued his coverage in The Athletic Calling Ayton “Plan A” for Detroit, which goes into the draft.

“In reality, however, Thursday’s events signal that the Ayton route is plan B. Plan A manifested itself in Brooklyn when Ivey unexpectedly slipped to the Pistons and they found a way to get back into the lottery to add majors. According to sources, this was the best case scenario,” Edwards wrote.

The Pistons now have one of the most intriguing young cores in the league, including Cade Cunningham and Saddiq Bey. Adding Ivey and Juren to the mix could set them up for years to come.

That doesn’t mean they won’t try to nab Ayton, who is certainly ahead of Juren in terms of development. However, the pressure to get him is much less than before.
