It feels like years ago, the Chicago Bulls were talked about as a legitimate competitor in the Eastern Conference and DeMar DeRozan is an MVP candidate.
The Bulls have really fallen since the All-Star break, falling to 5th seed in the Eastern Conference, and they are only two games ahead of 7th seed Toronto Raptors.
What happened to Chicago?
Simple answer? The power of the schedule. The Bulls had one of the toughest second-half schedules in the NBA this season, and according to Tankathonthey still have the ninth toughest fixture remaining this season.
The rise in size of the opponent exposed the Bulls, when they had a fearsome 2-18 victory over eight of the strongest teams in the NBA.
I’m not saying you should tear up your Chicago Bulls futures ticket, but the Bulls will have to get past a few of these teams if they want any shots to win the East (+2000 at WynnBET) or the NBA Finals (+3000 at WynnBET).
For short-term bettors, this is a perfect sign that you need to get rid of Chicago when it comes to taking a step forward in the competition. I followed this trend yesterday in my NBA Best Betting columnand it succeeded as the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Bulls, 126-98, as the 8-point favorite.
The Bulls have a solid roster, but they’ve really struggled in the last 15 games, placing 25th in the NBA in offensive ratings and 20th in defensive ratings. They had a net rating of negative-5.3 during that time period, trailing the Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards. All four of those teams are likely to have to miss the Eastern play-in this season.
The Bulls are still waiting for point guard Lonzo Ball to return from a knee injury, and if he does, he could help get them back on track, but I’m not counting on that.
Chicago will face the Boston Celtics in the first round if the season ends today, and the Celtics have the best nets in the league (13.3) in the last 15 games.
The Bulls are struggling then they face the elite of the NBA, and your best bet is to beat them until they prove they can win.
