UFC 272: Bryce Mitchell defeats Edson Barboza.

Bryce Mitchell defeated Edson Barboza by unanimous decision (30-25, 30-26, 30-27) at UFC 272 on Saturday March 5, 2022 live from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

Mitchell came over the cage to close the gap while Barboza decided to move outside and throw kicks. The two fighters exchanged kicks and punches, with Mitchell dropping Barboza with a big right hand. Barboza was able to regain his feet at the fence, but Mitchell brought him back to the ground. From above, Mitchell was able to land several powerful punches and strong elbows. Barboza was eventually able to unseat Mitchell and get back on his feet. Barboza finished the round well, landing a big right hand but just missing with a spinning kick and a flying knee.

Barboza opened the second round with an inside leg kick. Tired of being kicked, Mitchell landed his second takedown of the fight in the middle of the Octagon. Mitchell opened a cut over Barboza’s eye after several punches. Barboza was able to get up again, Mitchell took him down again. Mitchell was able to move halfway up and continued to land heavy punches.

Barboza’s corner told him between rounds that he lost the first two rounds and needed a finish if he was going to win the fight. Barboza started round three aggressively, coming forward and attacking with kicks and punches. Mitchell switched levels and landed a double leg takedown. Mitchell continued his ground and pound attack. Barboza nearly caught Mitchell in a triangle, but Mitchell interrupted the submission attempt by picking Barboza up and slamming him. Mitchell landed several punches off a side hill. Barboza tried to escape but gave up the full mount. Mitchell landed a pair of strong elbows. Mitchell controlled the rest of the lap at the front.

Mitchell entered the fight and placed 11th, one spot behind Barboza. While Mitchell arrived in Las Vegas with an unbeaten record, the fight against Barboza was the biggest fight of his career. With the lopsided win, Mitchell will face a top 10 opponent in his next fight.

Barboza joined UFC 272 as the 10th featherweight fighter. However, Barboza fought in his previous fights. In his last fight, Barboza was KO’d by Giga Chikadze. After losing to Mitchell, Barboza has seven losses in his last 10 fights.
