BOSTON (CBS) – The Bruins will be a bit short on the blue line when they finish a seven-game house. Defender Matt Grzelcyk will be sidelined Monday night as Team B welcomes the Anaheim Ducks to TD Garden.
Grzelcyk quickly walked away from Saturday’s win over the Jets after being named to the board by Pierre-Luc Duboius of Winnipeg in the first term. He got back into the game and finished with 13:35 ice time, and was credited with an assist in David Pastrnak’s winning goal in the third inning.
Head coach Bruce Cassidy is cautiously optimistic that Grzelcyk avoided a serious injury after Saturday’s game, but said there could be lingering effects from the injury. That seems to be the case, as Grzlecyk missed Monday morning’s skating and now counts as day in and day out.
“We’ll be listing him daily until we have other news,” Cassidy said Monday. “[He’s] definitely go out tonight”.
With Grzelcyk out, Uhro Vaakanainen joined Charlie McAvoy in Boston’s top defensive tie on Monday morning. Mike Reilly is also back in the fold after missing out on COVID-19 protocols. and could be back in the lineup on Monday night. Reilly skates with Brandon Carlo in the second defensive pairing match in Boston during the morning skate.
This season, Grzelcyk has registered 14 assists and a pair of goals in his 36 matches. He’s averaging 19+ minutes on the ice and is a plus five out of five, ranking second among the Bruins’ defensive players behind McAvoy’s plus nine rating.
Boston has won five of six to start its house, and the Bruins are currently sitting 24-12-2 on the season.
