Bruce Feldman’s nominees, from Sun Belt coach to NFL assistant – The Athletic

As expected, Justin Fuente is absent from Virginia Tech. Athletic director Whit Babcock almost fired Fuente last season, but Hokies negotiate paid him an $8.75 million buyout to continue. The Hokies job is not at the LSU or USC level – nor Florida, if that job is open – but it shows one of the better vacancies on the market this winter.

Babcock wasted little time finding a new head coach when he was AD in Cincinnati, when Tommy Tuberville ran away from Lubbock in the middle of a recruiting dinner to move into the Bearcats job. That hire is clearly a looter, but Babcock will have some very good options in Blacksburg right now.

With Sonny Dykes and Dave Clawson now off the board, things are getting more interesting. One leading candidate is Billy Napier of Louisiana, but sources tell us he’s also emerged as a favorite for the Florida vacancy.

Head Coach on the Radar

Louisiana’s Billy Napier is another top Team 5 coach, though he may be considering bigger jobs.
