Browns could make a big QB trade if Deshaun Watson’s suspension is increased

There’s a strong possibility the Cleveland Browns could trade at quarterback with Deshaun Watson suspended for more than six games.

Currently, the Cleveland Browns are expected to have Deshaun Watson as quarterback after a six-game suspension. But those plans may have changed.

According to Cleveland.com Mary Kay Cabot, the team is considering taking on signal caller Jimmy Garoppolo from the San Francisco 49ers if Watson is absent for more than six games. Based on outside reports that Commissioner Roger Goodell is pushing for a longer sentence, the odds are rising.

As for San Francisco’s compensation remains to be seen, as Cleveland pledged several draft picks to the Houston Texans in exchange for the right to Watson’s services. Additionally, 49ers general manager John Lynch is attempting to rake in more capital following his own aggressive maneuver to pick Trey Lance third overall in 2021.

If the Cleveland Browns decide to move Jimmy Garoppolo to make up for the loss of Deshaun Watson, it wouldn’t necessarily be the worst move. This is primarily due to how the rest of their roster is currently set up.

Cleveland has one of the best rushing attacks in the league in addition to a very strong offensive line, which will put Garoppolo at ease considering what he had in New England and San Francisco. In addition, the defense is expected to make a more significant leap, which would be very beneficial.

Last but not least, the division is still technically winnable for Cleveland. They haven’t won it since 1989, however, and like reigning conference champions Bengals, resides in the division alongside the Ravens and Steelers. With some reasonably competent quarterback play, the Browns can at least make it through the postseason even if they don’t win the division.

Having Deshaun Watson would help them a lot, but Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t such a bad option for the Cleveland Browns. We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out, but the alternative is out there.
