Brie and Nikki Bella almost left WWE in 2008, women’s matches got more watch time because of Total Divas

Brie and Nikki Bella took to the “Wrestling with Freddie” podcast to talk about their run in WWE, Total Divas, their early days in the company, and more.

Brie Bella told WWE they would have walked away if they hadn’t been called up to the main roster in 2008:

“We really give you (Freddie Prince Jr) a lot of credit because when we were at FCW for so long, they kept saying, ‘Wow, we don’t know what to do with the twins.’ We were like, it looks like it just wrote itself. It was your ideas that continued to drive me, I think, that made a lot of people in the company at the time see that there was something special. The best thing is no social media. We can hide the fact, I mean FCW didn’t have a television at that time. No one knows Nicole and I. Locally in Tampa, yes, they know there are wrestling twins down there, but in the whole global WWE world, people don’t know. That was really the time. It’s not Nikki as much as I am, because they keep saying they have no idea. At the time, I had a boyfriend who said, ‘You gave up everything to wrestle. Was there a time when you started to give back to the people who were there with you? You never see your family. I’m here alone all the time. ‘ I thought, that’s a really good point. So I’m the one who pushed it. I said, ‘Listen. Let us know. You told us at Diva Search that you weren’t looking for two. We ask to try again. We drove here. We are being paid peanuts. Be honest. If you don’t know what to do with the twins, we can go somewhere else. ‘”

Freddie Prince Jr credits reality TV shows Bella Twins and Total Divas as what kicked off the move to feature longer women’s matches:

“When I wrote the segment for you, and you had the matches, the five-minute and two-minute women’s matches were the entry. So you have three minutes to tell some kind of story in a wrestling match. That’s as much as we get, and at PPV they’re going to split points in 10 minutes, and a lot of times, those matches will be cut off the whole PPV, so we’re 10 to 0. Then. two people sold a show to E! called Total Divas. This show started to gain a lot of traction and a lot of people started watching it. Suddenly, it received a higher rating than some of what WWE was putting out there. This was true after I left the company. I’m watching the matches and it feels like a longer game, but I don’t have the time. Suddenly, and I’ll never forget this, the two wrestled with Nattie and someone, and had a commercial break. I’ve never seen a women’s match take a commercial break in a match in my life. I returned to the company for the second time. I talked to Vince a lot about this. That’s the reason. I know this is for real because he said the words. That’s why women’s matches start longer. The foundation that women are taking up today, and others have tried, have tried to take a lot of the credit, or maybe put more attention on themselves than they deserve, as Ronda (Rousey) did. tell me some weird things that I like. , ‘I don’t know if you are aware of my influence.’ But the reason female wrestling has got where it is today is because of what you two have built. Then the other women you put on that program help build as well. But that’s why WrestleMania has such sought-after women. That’s why there’s an Iron Women match in NXT. That’s why all women are allowed to do more with their bodies within the scope of work. I’m not joking. 90% of it is due to the concrete that you have poured before”.

Brie added: “We all know Vince is about to put a**es in the chair. He cares about money, like buying tickets and all that. One thing Total Divas did was show Vince that people go to shows to see women. It’s not just the men coming. It started with young girls and women buying tickets just to see Total Divas. He doesn’t count it by, oh, there’s a sign. It’s starting to get to the point where you’ll see these crowds. “

Nicole said, “That’s when you start to see the demo change.”

Brie continued. “I think that’s when Vince is like that, we have to give them more time because people are really coming in right now.”
