Brewer’s next renewal candidate isn’t so obvious

The next player set to get a contract extension from the Milwaukee Brewers isn’t so obvious.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ 2021 season ended faster than hoped as they were eliminated in the divisional round by eventual World Series champion Atlanta Braves. In 2022, the team not only aims to win the Central Division title for the second year in a row, but also to win its first World Series title in franchise history.

After this season, the Brewers have 12 players who will face free agency, including Lorenzo Cain. But when it comes to which player Milwaukee needs to offer a contract extension, one candidate should be Willy Adames.

Brewer’s next renewal candidate isn’t so obvious

Adames spent the early days of his major league career with the Tampa Bay Rays, who traded him from the Detroit Tigers. Making his debut in 2018, Adames was part of the Tampa Bay teams that made the Division Series in 2019 and won the American League pennant in 2020.

But in the second month of the 2021 season, the Brewers acquired Adames and pitcher Trevor Richards from the Rays in exchange for relief pitchers JP Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen. The trade proved more than rewarding for the brewers.

Adames played in 99 regular-season games for Milwaukee and put up some solid numbers. On the record, Adames has cut .285/.366/.521 while he hit 20 home runs (3rd most on the team), 58 RBI (3rd most), 61 runs scored (5th most) and 104 hits (4th most).

At the end of the year, Adames landed on the NL MVP pick and placed 16th.

For Milwaukee, they won’t have to worry about Adames hitting the free hand until the end of the 2024 season. Adames is subject to arbitration for the 2023 and 2024 campaigns.

Of course, that all depends on Adames having as productive a year in 2022 as he did in 2021. Brewer’s next renewal candidate isn’t so obvious
