Brent Venables releases scathing statement on Cale Gundy’s resignation

Oklahoma Football head coach Brent Venables reacted strongly to Wide Receivers coach Cale Gundy’s retirement.

Oklahoma Football Wide Receivers practice Monday Cale Gundy resigned after uttering a racial slur while reading from a screen in front of players while reciting a social media post.

The news drew a lot of attention across the college football landscape, and Sooners head coach Brent Venables stepped in and released a statement on the matter.

More importantly, the statement reiterates that Gundy said the bow “multiple times” in front of his players while reading from the screen, belying Gundy’s statement he made when he resigned, suggesting that he said the arc once and implied what not knowing he had said.

“Coach Gundy left the program knowing he did wrong. He chose to read a racially charged word to his players not just once, but several times, which is offensive to everyone… This is unacceptable. Period.”

Venables makes a valid point. Although his intentions may not have been malicious and this could have been a one-off incident, this does not alter the fact that the action was committed and the program must continue.

Even though Venables is in his first season as head coach, it’s hard to overlook that Gundy was the one senior member of the Oklahoma coaching staff who served under former coaches Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley. Additionally, Gundy has seen the growth of several prominent wide receivers during his tenure, including Hollywood Brown and CeeDee Lamb.

Nonetheless, his time with Norman is over and the team is looking to move forward. It was reported that offensive analyst L’Damian would take over Washington as interim coach until the program finds someone to permanently fill the role. However, what happens to Gundy remains to be seen.

Venables’ account of the matter in his statement paints a different picture of what happened with Gundy, adding a layer to the complicated affair in Norman.
