Nintendo, always the iconoclast, has opted for the latest Nintendo Direct to avoid announcing the GameCube zelda Remakes that we’re sure are already done, nor any information about what is to come Mario Moviebut to surprising-reveal the official title Breath of the Wild 2 . It was The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Except, no, sorry, we’ll never get out of the habit of calling it Breath of the Wild 2.
Let’s be very clear here: Tears of the Kingdom (DeadK) is a direct continued to breath of the wild somehow no zelda Game is a direct sequel since 1987 Zelda II: The Adventures of Link. Yes, of couse, Majora’s mask followed by ocarina of timeand Phantom Hourglass picked up afterwards wind alarm clockbut DeadK is something else. This is a game openly created from the leftover bits when they were finished BotWthe seemingly build up same basemap, which started development as DLC for the previous game. This is without a doubt, no matter how brilliant, quite a bit more breath of the wild. That’s why it messes with our brains.
With a couple of weeks gone by for the title to sink in… it’s not. I bet neither for you. I bet your brain offers you”BotW2“before it starts to remember if it”The tears” or just “Tears‘ then loses himself, wondering if it could possibly be ‘Tears’ as in rips… and then, yes, we can all agree to just not care.

Come on, at least it should have been The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Tears of the Kingdom. Sure, they might have to release it in a bigger box to fit everything on the cover, but at least it would make some sense. And it’s not like Japan is averse to the lengthy title. Say hello, Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. Or do you know White Princess the Second ~ Yappari Itto ni Ittemo Soujyanakutemo OK-na Gotsugou Shugi Gakuen Renai Adventure.
And look at us kotaku know that we are not alone in this.
Devil, far more people have discovered kotaku‘s coverage of the sequel by searching “BOTW” on Google rather than mentioning tears or kingdoms. People will be so slow to turn this on!
It also certainly doesn’t help that when my eyes read “TOTK,” the first thing I think of is “TikTok,” and my god, I don’t need that term involuntarily stamped into my brain more times than I have YouTube ads on my phone do.
Of course, that distracts us from more important things, like how we should organize international protests to make sure Nintendo doesn’t break guns after being banged on a leaf this time. Can you imagine? Can you imagine if they hadn’t listened to the unanimous agreement of the entire world population that this was a horrible mechanic and the worst aspect of BotW? Yes. Of course you can. It’s Nintendo. I assume they’ll make them break more often, but this time each break permanently lowers your stamina dial.
This also seems a good time to declare my unreserved belief in it BotW2 will be released to overlap the end of the Switch era and the launch of XL Dome’s Switch: Pro (because they’re clearly not going to call the a “switch 2” will they?). As we all know, something that happened twice before is evidence of a pattern as eternal as Link fighting Ganon in every era, so same as that Twilight Princess overlapped the GameCube with the Wii, and BotW stood astride the Wii U and Switch, I have no doubt that this will happen again. But even if it doesn’t, no one will remember me predicting it with such certainty in an article about something else.
In the meantime, let’s not kid ourselves. It is BotW2 in our hearts and always will be. I fear for those poor folks in Nintendo’s marketing department who are crying their kingdom tears at our stupidity.
