The Atlanta Braves have announced they have renewed their All-Star third baseman Austin Riley to a mammoth contract.

That Atlanta Braves to have announced to have extended their all-star third baseman Austin Riley to a mammoth contract extension.

The extension will be for 10 years and $212 million, representing an average annual value (AAV) of $21.2 million. That will matter for luxury tax purposes, but the contract breakdown is a little different.

Braves extended Austin Riley for another 10 years

The Braves have renewed All-Star third baseman Austin Riley through the 2032 season with a massive contract extension.

Riley will earn $15 million in 2023, $21 million in 2024, and $22 million for the remainder of the contract (until 2032). In addition, the club will have a $20 million club option for 2033. This contract would make Riley a contract for almost his entire career as he is currently 25 years old. If the team option is exercised, Riley would be 36 at the end of the deal.

Riley played in 101 games that season and here are his stats and how they rank in the National League.

  • .301 batting average (7th)
  • .604 batting percentage (1st)
  • .964 OPS (2nd)
  • 239 bases total (1st)
  • 31 doubles (2nd)
  • 29 home runs (2nd)
  • 68 RBI (6th)
  • 4.7 rWAR (5th)

He’s on his way to getting MVP votes like he did last season. Last season, Riley wasn’t an All-Star but finished seventh in NL MVP voting and won a Silver Slugger Award.

It’s an excellent deal for the Braves. If Riley plays like he did this season and last (and he probably will), it’s actually a steal for her. They will have him, first baseman Matt Olson, second baseman Ozzie Albies, and outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. together at least through the 2025 season. If the club exercises its squad options, these core four will be together in their current contract until at least 2027.

It sure could be a bargain for Riley, but as numerous players in baseball history have seen, nothing can be taken for granted. He could be the best player in baseball and then an injury comes along and it’s not you.

$212 million is life-changing for Riley and it’s life-changing for his family, so it’s a good deal for both parties. Braves commits star third baseman to monster expansion
