Box Office: ‘Downton Abbey’ sequel to ‘Doctor Strange’ second debut

The Doctor is still at it as Marvel’s latest film continues to top the box office against some very decent competition.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” added another $8.5 million to its box office earnings on Friday, taking its total gross to $318 million. Meanwhile, Downton Abbey: A New Era will end the weekend with an estimated $18 million.

Downton Abbey: A New Era, the second film spin-off of the popular British series, grossed a solid $1 million in previews in 3,300 theaters on Thursday. But its weekend estimates won’t be enough to dethrone “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is attempting to top the domestic box office for a third weekend. Alex Garland’s horror film Men also opens this weekend but appears to be off to a soft start at just $423,000 from 1,800 screens during Thursday’s previews.

The first Downton Abbey film to be released in 2019 grossed more than $190 million at the global box office. Although the COVID-19 pandemic may make it unrealistic to reach those numbers for A New Era, the film has already grossed $29 million since its April 29 overseas release. Directed by Simon Curtis, Downton Abbey stars many of the franchise’s favorites including Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter and Phyllis Logan travel to the south of France to uncover a mystery.

Downton Abbey: A New Era was well-received by critics, earning a certified re-rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. diversity‘s Peter Debruge called the film an “audience-friendly reunion” in his review and wrote that the film feels like a “loving group hug.”
