A 19-year-old South Carolina man who was given a suspended sentence weeks ago after pleading guilty to a lower count of assault and assault in connection with an alleged sexual assault is now on trial two new independent counts.
Bowen Gray Turner, of Jackson Drive in Orangeburg, SC, is newly charged with underage purchase or possession of alcohol, according to Orangeburg County court documents reviewed by Law&Crime. He is also accused of threatening the person or family or a public worker.
Turner appeared before a judge Thursday, records show. He was issued bail of $465 in the alcohol case and $1,087 in the matter of the alleged threat. He was also ordered to seek permission to leave the state and to have no contact with victims. The defendant is scheduled to appear in court again on July 25.
FoxNews reported that the two new cases occurred when Turner “stumbled drunk in the middle of a street, lied to an MP” and caused a stir during his booking.
“If you try to put that mask on me, I’ll bite your friggin’ finger off,” he allegedly told an MP while challenging the prison facility’s Covid-19 policies, FOX News called.
Local TV station WCSC similarly reported but without the expletive.
Local news website FITS News called Turner allegedly bought $100 worth of alcohol using a fake ID and repeatedly tried to get a ride with a female employee. The website too called Turner called this employee a “slut” during his arrest.
Turner was recently sentenced to five years probation, FOX News reported, under South Carolina’s Youthful Offender Act. district judge Markley Dennis should have imposed this sentence to a reduced number of attacks and batteries following a series of alleged sexual assaults. The accused is is said to have pleaded guilty to one of three alleged attacks.
gymnast was accused of sexually molesting a teenager — Dallas Stoler – in 2018. Stoller and Turner were both 16 years old at the time of this alleged attack. Stoller’s father said WCSC that his daughter came home drunk, distraught, and bruised; She told her family that she was sexually assaulted.
A judge allowed Turner to remove a GPS monitor despite a first-degree sexual conduct charge related to that case in Bamberg County, WCSC called. Less than five months later, Turner was arrested and charged with the exact same crime: first-degree criminal sexual conduct, according to the TV network reported. The second charge was allegedly related to an incident at a party in Orangeburg County.
prosecutors is said to have dropped the Stoller case there The alleged victim died what BuzzFeed called a “self-inflicted injury” before she could testify against Turner. The website described the injury as a stab wound to the leg, which ended fatally; According to reports, Stoller’s relatives called that they do not believe that Stoller intended to kill himself.
The Stoller family is applicant prosecutors to reopen the matter, and has slammed the government’s efforts – or lack thereof – on Turner. Turner for example to have said “violating the terms of his ties” to playing golf and eating at area restaurants.
Court records have at the same time argued that Turner “effectively escaped custody on nearly fifty (50) occasions.”
“These blatant violations of house arrest by the defendant pose a serious threat to victims and the wider community, as well as to the integrity of our justice system,” the a document submitted on April 6th. It said a company operating electronic surveillance equipment failed to notify authorities of Turner’s movements.
Other court document obtained from Law&Crime confirms that “SLED investigated three allegations of sexual assault against the defendant.” BuzzFeed called all three cases involved three different women; one of them, Chloe Bess, has consented to be publicly named. Turner pleaded guilty to the reduced charges in the Bess case.
The case was marred by ethical issues for law enforcement.
The “Second Circuit Solicitor’s Office was selected to pursue all pending cases against the Defendant after the First Circuit Solicitor’s Office was dismissed on the basis of a conflict of interest,” a document shows. “The defendant’s father was employed as an investigator for the First Circuit Solicitor’s Office at the time of the defendant’s indictment and is the basis for the denial.”
BuzzFeed too written down the defendant’s connections to law enforcement; and reported that he had been represented by a state legislature— Brad Hutto, a senior Democrat. According to the website, the first case of a teenager that has not been publicly identified is still under investigation.
Several news organizations noted that a parole violation in the case related to the Bess attack could result in Turner being registered as a sex offender.
The new cases are numbered 2022A3810700369 (for the threat) and 2022A3810700370 (for the purchase or possession of alcohol) in Orangeburg County, SC
