Bob Marley’s grandson Joseph Mersa Marley has died at the age of 31

There were tributes after reports emerged that legendary musician Bob Marley’s grandson had died aged 31.

Politicians in Jamaica took to social media to mourn the death of Joseph “Mersa” Marley, who died in Florida just days after Christmas.

Florida radio station WZPP Radio was among the first to report the tragedy and later confirmed he was found unresponsive in his vehicle Tuesday morning.

The publication reported that he suffered an asthma attack.

The Honorable Olivia Grange, Jamaica’s Minister for Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport conducted the tributes for the musician.

“I am deeply saddened by the news that artist Joseph Marley, son of reggae star Stephen Marley and grandson of reggae superstar Bob Marley, has passed away,” she tweeted.

“We were honored by Joseph, whose stage name was Jo Mersa, who performed at our Jamaica 60 Launch in Miramar, Florida, USA in May.

“I send my deepest condolences to Stephen, Jo’s mother, Kerry, the Marleys and other family members. My deepest sympathy goes out to Joseph’s friends and collaborators and to the reggae music fraternity and fans everywhere.

“His untimely death at the young age of 31. is a great loss for music as we look to the next generation.

“May he find everlasting peace as we mourn his loss in this time of goodwill as we celebrate our love for one another with family and friends.”

Fans reacted to the news with shock and disbelief.

“My deepest condolences to Stephen Marley and the entire Marley family. May Joseph Marley, better known as Jo Mersa, rest in peace!! Gosh!!!!!” wrote one fan, podcaster Maliika Walker.

Jamaican opposition leader Mark J Golding also expressed his shock.

“I just learned of the tragic loss of Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley. A talented young reggae artist, son of Stephen Marley and grandson of Bob Marley aged just 31,” he wrote on Twitter.

“The loss of a child is a devastating blow that no parent should be subjected to, my condolences to Stephen and the entire family.”

Joseph’s father was Bob Marley’s son Stephen.

Bob Marley died in 1981 at the age of 36 after suffering from cancer.
