Members of the public raised the alarm when staff and customers at a nearby restaurant saw one of the men hold an esky in waters off Shore Street North, according to Queensland Police.

“Of course, if you see someone bobbing up and down in the water, that’s always a problem,” witness Tim Varitimos told 7NEWS.

“It didn’t look like he was swimming or fighting any currents, (he was) just kind of floating.

“They were probably just having a nice day on the water when they capsized and drifted away.”

The surviving man and girl reportedly swam ashore and were taken to Redland Hospital in stable condition with minor injuries.

Redland Bay Water Police stayed on site to recover the ship.

A report is prepared for the coroner.
