BMW X1 receives five-star ANCAP safety rating, iX1 unrated

All petrol variants of the new-generation BMW X1 small SUV range have been awarded a five-star safety rating by Australian crash tester ANCAP based on tests conducted by Euro NCAP.

However, the five-star safety rating doesn’t carry over to the X1’s all-electric iX1 sibling, which remains untested and unrated by ANCAP.

The BMW X1 scored 86 percent for protecting adult occupants, 88 percent for protecting children, 76 percent for protecting vulnerable road users and 94 percent for safety assistants.

ANCAP found that the X1 “performs respectably” in all four key areas of the rating, although protection for the driver’s chest was rated weak in the frontal offset test and protection for the rear passenger’s chest was marginal in the full-width test.

The Australian Crash Testing Authority rated the effectiveness of the X1’s Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system as good at mitigating or avoiding a collision when driving forward, however the system is unable to react to pedestrians in reverse.

All 2023 BMW X1 variants are equipped with the following safety equipment as standard:

  • Front, front side, side and center airbags
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Safe exit warning
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Adaptive cruise control with stop/go
  • Surround view camera
  • Parking sensors front and rear

Launched in Australia last month, the third generation BMW X1 is bigger, more powerful and better equipped than its predecessor.

It starts at $53,900 pre-road for the front-wheel drive sDrive18i and goes up to $65,900 pre-road for the xDrive20i all-wheel drive.

The lineup will be joined in Q1 2023 by the electric iX1 xDrive30, priced at $82,900 before road costs.
