Buck Martinez, a broadcaster covering the Toronto Blue Jays, will step away from the dressing room to attend to his health following his recent cancer diagnosis.
After a recent cancer diagnosis, Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez will leave the booth so he can focus on treatment and take care of his health.
The news was shared on Twitter by @SportsnetPR, Sportsnet’s public relations department. In the tweet, @SportsnetPR shared a statement from Martinez. According to the statement, Sunday’s game between the Blue Jays and the Oakland Athletics will be “the last game in the dressing room for the time being” due to Martinez’s cancer diagnosis.
As Martinez shared in his statement, he is “honored and privileged to have the support of Blue Jays fans, colleagues, staff and players,” and he has had that support from them since he “arrived.” [in Toronto] 1981.”
According to Martinez, as he “takes on this next challenge, the support will mean the world [him].”

Martinez mentioned that he was “grateful for a great medical team” and that he was optimistic about his battle with cancer.
“I’m hoping to return to my Sportsnet teammates for the stretch run later this season, but in the meantime I’ll be watching from the sidelines as I fight the good fight,” Martinez wrote.
Martinez also mentioned that he’s grateful to those who respect his privacy while he’s dealing with it.
Unsurprisingly, the Blue Jays rallied around Martinez and issued a statement of support for him following his announcement.
