Blue Devils announce season-end awards

DURHAM – The Duke Men’s Soccer Program was recently convened as a group to present the annual awards at the team party. Several lavishly decorated Blue Devils have added more awards to their growing portfolio.
Sophomore Peter Stroud named the team’s Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season, the second year Thorleifur Ulfarsson Listed as Attacker of the Year and Senior Ian Murphy was named Defensive Player of the Year. Shakur Mohammed was selected as the team’s freshman of the year, while still a sophomore Krew Verratti was awarded John Rennie Coach Award.
Stroud has built his MVP campaign from last season in almost every stat, scoring four goals and four assists, while also hitting a career-high 1,717 minutes. The Chester, NJ, native has shown a great engine, becoming one of the top two-way players in the country, culminating in being named All-American third-team, 2021 ACC quarterback and Team first of the whole ACC.
Ulfarsson has added another honor to his growing list of accomplishments, after being named All-American First Team, ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2021 and All-ACC First Team, among other honors. other awards. Kopavogur’s sophomore, Iceland has scored 15 goals and one assist, for 31 points and is the most goal-scoring number for the Blues since 2011.
After finishing his senior season with the All-South Third Team title, Murphy was honored by his team after a big season at center back. The Redlands, California, native ranked second on the team in total minutes with 1,748, recording two assists while playing a key role in defence, conceding just 23 goals in 20 games.
Considered one of the top freshmen in the country, Mohammed added the team’s Freshman of the Year award to his 2021 ACC Freshman title. A native of Kumasi, Ghana, Mohammed leads the Blues in assists and finished with 3 goals and 7 assists, taking home 13 points from 18 games. Mohammed was also named the All-South Third Team.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Verratti has played four games this season, including his first game against a teammate against Seattle. Verratti was a tireless worker in training and on the pitch, playing in multiple positions and playing leadership roles for the Blues.
