Blue Beetle casts Susan Sarandon as the main villain, Victoria Kord

Suzanne Sarandon will officially join the DCEU in WB’s Blue Beetle as the villainous Victoria Kord, reports The Wrap exclusively. The Oscar winner replaced Sharon stonewho was previously in talks to play the villain before Sarandon finalized the deal.
The actress will share the screen Cobra Kai’s Xolo Mariduena, who plays Jaime Reyes the Blue Bug. While Sarandon serves the titular hero as the main villain, Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayan’s MC) will play a secondary villain, Carapax the Indestructible Man. Details of their involvement remain scarce, but expect they have important ties to each other. The latest additions to the cast join a stacked Latin ensemble including Harvey Guillen, Belissa Escobedoand Brazilian star Bruna Marquezine.
Victoria Kord will be an original character created for the film, but her last name certainly rings a bell. Those familiar with the source material know that the man who donned the alien suit in front of Jaime Reyes was Ted Kord, a genius scientist and occasional member of the Justice League. It’s unclear if the film will feature Ted or replace him with Victoria, but the inclusion of a kord shouldn’t be ignored. In the comics, Carapax the Indestructible Man uses an “indestructible” technology invented by Jarvis Kord and his nephew Ted.
An official synopsis isn’t available, but we can assume the film follows teenage superhero Jaime Reyes, a Mexican living in El Paso, who discovers an alien scarab named the Blue Beetle. The alien attaches to his spine, granting him armor and increased speed and strength. Plus the ability to create weapons and shields on the fly, similar to Green Lantern. The first DC film to feature a Latinx superhero will be helmed by a Puerto Rican director Angel Manuel Sotoadjustment of Blue Beetle Screenplay by a Mexican writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
Blue Beetle is Sarandon’s first foray into the blockbuster superhero film business. Across the Pond, she recently voiced Black Widow in the third part of the audio podcast series Marvel’s Wastelanders. Aside from a handful of film appearances, the Oscar-winning actor has been a steady presence on the small screen lately. On television, Sarandon received Emmy nominations for Ryan Murphy‘s feud as bed Davis opposite Jessica Long as Joan Crawford.
The live action Blue Beetle Adaptation is expected to premiere exclusively in theaters on August 18, 2023.
