Blizzard’s own studio Proletariat announces plans to form a union

Workers at a third Activision-Blizzard studio are planning the organization: Proletariat, which readers may recall, was the studio behind the battle royale game spellbreak which was bought by Blizzard in June to support development World of Warcraft: DragonflightShe officially announced it she forms her own union.

The recently formed Proletariat Workers Alliance, which falls under the Communications Workers Alliance umbrella with both Raven Software and Blizzard Albany, revealed the formation of the union and stated its intention to ask management to officially recognize its formation. And this time, the union covers the entire studio instead of just one department.

“We are game developers of diverse skill sets and backgrounds, brought together by a shared commitment to our organization’s grand mission. Our goal is to be a popular game studio with a diverse team that does our best and creates innovative experiences at the frontier of game development. We are unionizing to protect that mission and set the studio on the path to success as we join ABK as we enter the next chapter of the proletariat.”

The protections mentioned in the statement primarily revolve around ensuring workers receive flexible PTO, remote work options, living wages, equitable overtime policies and diverse hiring practices, among other things.

Just like Raven Software before it, the PWA asks ABK management to “voluntarily acknowledge [its] unionize and negotiate in good faith,” while citing Microsoft’s earlier commitment to remain neutral in union efforts. “The proletariat has always valued cooperation through mutual dignity, respect and trust. We will embody these values ​​as we work with leadership to do our best work and innovate what a games studio can be for its fans and employees.”
