Blake James Becomes Sports Director of Miami Hurricanes

Miami athletic director Blake James is out with school, two days after the Hurricanes team lost at Florida State.

The school, which described James’ departure as a mutual agreement to part ways, said in a statement that a national search for the next A.D. would begin immediately.

“It is an honor to lead Miami athletics and be part of such a world-class organization,” James said in the statement. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done together, although I know much remains unattainable. I would like to thank the University leadership, the athletics staff, their coaches. me and especially our incredible student-athletes because of their commitment to excellence and belief in what the University of Miami can achieve. Best of luck and look forward to my next efforts.”

The move comes about six weeks after school president Julio Frenk released a letter to the college community affirming he will increase his involvement with athletics and saying “we are fully committed to building build championship-caliber teams at The U.”

Football – the biggest part of the Miami sports franchise – has struggled again this season. Miami is 19-15 in coach Manny Diaz’s three seasons, including 5-5 this season. The Hurricanes squandered their eight-point lead in the final minutes of their 31-28 loss to Florida State on Saturday.

James was part of the decision-making team that hired Diaz in 2018, pulling him away from the Temple job he had held for less than a month. Diaz served as Miami’s defensive coordinator under Mark Richt, and when Richt stepped down on December 30, 2018, the Hurricanes needed just hours before completing a deal with Diaz.

Last month, James offered deep support to the third-year coach, telling ESPN’s Andrea Adelson, “It’s too hard to look into the future. I don’t know what’s going to happen, again. I think People are constantly being judged, and you make the decisions that you feel are best for the show.”

Sources told ESPN this weekend that if Miami fires Diaz, James won’t be the next coach hire.

James took the job in Miami in February 2013, when the Hurricanes were still in the midst of an NCAA investigation into the actions of former rogue growth spurt Nevin Shapiro. The Hurricanes crossed scholarship and probationary restrictions at Shapiro’s discretion, and James helped the school complete a number of facilities projects—a baseball player development center, a practice facility. indoor for football, a nutrition center and more.

He is also highly regarded nationally, having served as a past president of the NCAA Division I Board.
