Billy Napier consistently teases Florida soccer fans

Florida football broke fans’ hearts a few years ago when it was announced there would be no black uniforms. Billy Napier brings good news.

Dan Mullen taking over the football program in Florida — although it might be a bit hard to believe in hindsight — brought a lot of excitement. Yes, Gators fans wanted the team to return to the top of the SEC, but they also hoped Mullen could deliver on his promises to keep players happy.

One of the most talked about (and hoped for) aspects of this was the hope that Florida football would get an all-black back-up kit. The Gators track and field program has often featured the all-black uniforms in other sports, basketball being certainly the most notable. However, the football team did not have this opportunity.

It never came under Mullen, but it could come under new boss Billy Napier.

In an interview with SI’s Richard Johnson, Napier confirmed that the Gators would bring black uniforms under his supervision. He predicted the uniforms would become part of the rotation next season in 2023.

On the whole, you have to think that Gators fans would rather have another SEC East title, SEC championship, and maybe another national championship in their trophy cabinet than black uniforms.

At the same time, fans were rightfully upset that it never materialized under Mullen. And as we all realized, Mullen never did himself a huge favor when it came to garnering fans in the media. Napier apparently tries not to repeat these mistakes.

Based on his track record with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, Napier’s addition to the program should be reason enough for Gators fans to get excited for things to come. But last but not least, the forthcoming black uniforms should do the trick.
