Billy Corgan, best known as the frontman of alternative rock group Smashing Pumpkins, will host a benefit concert for the youngest victims of the recent Highland Park shooting.
Corgan, who has lived in Highland Park for over 20 years, announced the concert on Instagram in a post shared on the accounts of Smashing Pumpkins and tea shop Madame Zuzu’s, a local Highland Park shop he runs with his partner in 2020 founded by Chloe Mendel. In the video, which was recorded with Mendel outside of Madame Zuzus, Corgan said a special charity concert will be held on July 27 to raise funds for the July 4th Victim Assistance Fund.
“About a week ago, on July 4th, we had the terrible tragedy here in Highland Park that took so many lives and hurt so many people and really affected so many of us as a community,” Corgan said. “So we wanted to do a very special benefit concert on the evening of July 27.”
The July 4 shooting occurred during the Chicago, Illinois suburbs’ annual Independence Day parade. Seven people were killed and over 40 people were injured during the event.
According to Corgan’s video, the concert will be streamed live on YouTube for free, with viewers able to make donations to charity through the platform. Additionally, Corgan said “special guests” would be performing at the concert, including current Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and other members of the band, and that more details would be announced in the coming days.
“We really appreciate you joining us in this moment and helping us support those who currently have unmet needs,” Mendel said in the video. The victims and families really need help.”
