The Kansas Jayhawks and Bill Self won the national championship while making a record-breaking comeback.
Self was rightly emotional after the game as he and his family have been through a lot this year. The veteran coach lost his father just a few months ago and has been open about his grief throughout the tournament.
In the moments after winning the national championship and making that memorable comeback, Self could only think of two things – his gym students, of course, and his father.
“It’s great for the kids. This year is special for my family because we lost our father two months ago. We had a lot to play.” self said.

Discussing the comeback itself, Self explained that the team had a new approach. While they could be disappointed to face a 15-point deficit despite getting into the game early with a quick 7-0 run, Self instead worded his speech differently.

“I told them at halftime, would you rather be 15 with 20 left or 9 with 2 left?” Himself said after the game.
What he said worked. And the Jayhawks are national champions as a result.
